Description: This painting depicts iconic Half Dome in Yosemite National Park in California. The huge stone partial mountain is viewed across a valley floor with a river and trees. In the past, metal hand rails and steps not visible in this painting because of their relative small size and also I believe due to their location on the opposite or back side of the dome were affixed to the smooth upper portion as a usually sufficient way for hikers to ascend to the summit. This painting is signed with the name of the artist, Mario Santoro, in the lower front right corner. Following that name is ‘89, indicating this work was created thirty-five years ago in 1989. I don’t have any further information concerning the artist or history of the painting except that a few other works by him which were dated in the 1980s and being sold where I acquired this one in Los Angeles also were landscapes. This painting is executed in oil paint on Fredrix canvas panel. The dimensions of the panel are 9 inches wide by 12 inches high. The panel is in a wood spacer which in turn is in a wood frame. The frame has slightly different measurements along the outside edges which would be closest to a viewer looking at the framed painting from the front in contrast to the outside edges of the frame which would be closest to the wall if the framed painting is hung in a wall. The size difference between those front and rear four outside edges of the frame is maybe 1/8 or 3/16 of an inch on each side with the rear sides being wider by that limited extra part of an inch. The dimensions of the outside edges of the slightly larger rear sides of the frame are approximately 14 3/8 inches wide by 18 inches high. The condition of the painting is good. There are a couple very slight lines in the water of the river which are white color in contrast to the blue water but these are likely to not be noticed by a normal viewer of this piece unless specifically directed to look for them. I would characterize those white lines as the result of minimal abrasions or scuffs, maybe when the painting was carried in contact with another painting or object, and not scratch marks cutting into the painted surface. Sometimes flowing water hitting a rock in a river produces a bit of white color foam which can look normal rather than appear to be a scuff or other flaw, which contributes to a viewer not noticing the couple small white marks here. There are no chips or stains on the visible surface of the painting in the frame. If the panel on which the painting is executed is removed momentarily from the frame, there are a few places along the outside corner edges primarily on the right side where for a 1/8 inch or so extending into the painting from the edge there is some paint chipping or loss over time but this minor loss is not recent and normally is concealed under the lip of the frame. Consequently, that paint loss at the edge cannot be seen when the painting remains in its frame. The wood spacer holding the panel with the painting and the outer frame in which the spacer is inserted are both light oak when viewed from the rear. That oak spacer and oak outer frame have a moderate brown color finish on their visible front and sides. The condition of the wood spacer is good. The condition of the frame likewise would be considered good overall except that a portion about 1 1/4 inch in length cracked for some reason starting at the edge of the bottom left corner of the frame and was lost. This area of loss can be seen in a couple photographs with this listing. It is not too noticeable because most of the lost wood is along the bottom, downward or floor facing portion of the frame, but a bit of wood loss does extend upward maybe about 1/4 inch or more, so it is visible if someone looks at that frame corner while the painting is hung on a wall. It should be possible to put wood putty over that limited missing wood at that frame corner, but many potential buyers might be satisfied to continue to use the frame in its as is condition without attempting that small repair. Other purchasers who want to eliminate that flaw but are not inclined to try wood putty to complete a repair could purchase a replacement frame which will hold this size painting. Buyer to pay shipping and handling. The painting will be sent insured. The flat fee quoted for shipping and handling, which includes the cost of shipping materials, the shipper's delivery fees, insurance or such other protection against loss or damage in transit as the shipper may make available, applies only to a delivery address in the lower 48 states of the continental United States. Costs to ship the painting to Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico or to a foreign country can be considerably higher and will be determined only when the location of the buyer becomes known. Buyer to be solely responsible for all customs duties, import taxes and similar fees imposed by any foreign country to which the painting is sent. Please be advised that in recent years internet platforms have commenced to automatically bill, collect and remit to tax agencies sales tax on purchases of art in states of the United States. The rate of tax imposed is determined by the state in which the buyer is located. As a result, a purchaser may incur sales tax in some situations in contrast to the past where a seller, for reasons of convenience or lack of knowledge of sales tax procedures of various states, did not collect the tax.
