WWI IMPERIAL PRUSSIAN HOHENZOLLERN KNIGHTS CROSS SET IN CASE

Description: This is an extremely fine Prussian Knight's Cross of the House Order of Hohenzollern set with its original ribbon and two boutonnieres all in excellent condition. The Order is with flawless enamel work to both the obverse and reverse sides. The gilt finish on the crown, crossed swords and edges is excellent and with an attractive, light age toned patina. The edge of the lower arm is incised with the maker's mark, “W” for the prestigious firm of Wagner in Berlin, and with the “938” silver content number. The original piece of ribbon is with excellent color and fitted with separate gilt crown and crossed swords devices. One of the boutonnieres has an exquisite miniature suspended from the bow and is beautifully maker marked on the reverse of the gilt button with, ‘J Godet & Sohn, Berlin’ The other boutonniere is a gathered black and silver bow held in place by a gilt crown and crossed swords device. The reverse of this piece is plain brass. The set is housed in a red leatherette case with a white rayon lid pad and diagonally placed order ribbon. The bed upon which the individual pieces rest is of red felt. The hinged latch holds the case tightly closed. The case measures 4¾ x 4¾ and the lid is with chamfered edges. Although an attractive case, it is not correct for the piece. It remains a superb set in excellent, undamaged condition. The Knight's Cross of the House Order of Hohenzollern was established 23 August 1851 by Frederick Wilhelm IV and awarded only to officers for acts of bravery in combat who had previously been awarded the 1914 Prussian Iron Cross 1st Class. This is a stunning example of one of the most beautiful orders awarded by the Prussian Empire during the First World War and was considered by many to be the prerequisite to the Order Pour le Merite.8620
