As a result of this appointment and the restructuring of all the separate German state police into a single national police force, new regulations were instituted in July 1936 to bring about uniformity in dress for all police through-out the country. One of the new uniform regulations was the introduction of a standardized bayonet based on the earlier Prussian Landespolizei bayonet. The bayonet came in a un-slotted dress model and a scarcer "T" slotted service model. Alexander Coppel (Solingen) was a prominent maker of edged weapons and other steel products based in Solingen, Germany, a city historically known for its high-quality cutlery and bladed tools. Coppel's firm, founded in 1821, became one of the key manufacturers of military and civilian weapons in the 19th and early 20th centuries.Founding and Early History The firm was established by Alexander Coppel and began producing a wide range of steel goods, including swords, sabers, bayonets, and knives. The company's products were recognized for their craftsmanship, and the firm quickly grew in reputation, supplying both the civilian market and military contracts, particularly during times of war.Solingen’s Tradition of Blade Making Solingen is often referred to as the "City of Blades" due to its centuries-long history of metalworking and production of high-quality cutting tools. The Coppel family business thrived in this environment, competing alongside other notable manufacturers such as WKC (Weyersberg, Kirschbaum & Cie) and P.D. Lüneschloss.Expansion and Success By the late 19th century, Alexander Coppel & Co. had become a leading player in the international arms trade, supplying edged weapons to various European armies. Their products included cavalry sabers, infantry bayonets, and officer's swords, often marked with the Coppel firm's logo, a scale symbol (sometimes referred to as "the scales of justice"). This symbol became a distinctive mark of the firm and can still be seen on surviving weapons from this period.World Wars and Later Years During World War I, Coppel produced a significant amount of bayonets and other edged weapons for the German army. However, like many Solingen-based firms, the company faced challenges after Germany's defeat and the restrictions imposed by the Treaty of Versailles on weapons manufacturing. During World War II, the firm again produced blades and military goods for the German forces. After the war, Solingen’s weapons production was largely dismantled due to Allied restrictions, leading to a decline in the industry.Legacy and Collectibility Weapons produced by Alexander Coppel & Co. are highly valued by collectors today, particularly their pre-WWI sabers, bayonets, and other military equipment. The firm’s blades are known for their fine balance, sharpness, and craftsmanship, hallmarks of the Solingen tradition. Many Coppel blades are marked with the firm's distinctive logo and often include inscriptions or engravings specific to their military or ceremonial use. They are highly collectible among military historians, weapon enthusiasts, and antique dealers.Post-War Transformation Like other Solingen firms, Alexander Coppel shifted focus away from weapons production in the post-war period. Some of Solingen’s companies remained in the knife and cutlery business, but the era of large-scale edged weapon manufacturing largely came to an end. Coppel’s legacy is part of the broader history of Solingen’s rise as a premier location for blade production, with Coppel’s contribution being crucial to the city’s international reputation.
