Description: A smashing example of a small World War One Other Ranks Cap Badge for The Irish Guards The Irish Guards Regiment was formed in April 1900 by Queen Victoria to commemorate the Irish soldiers who fought in The Boer War on behalf of The British Empire. At the outbreak of World War One they were deployed to France in 1914 and took part in the Battles of Mons, Marne & Ypres. Additional Battalions were raised in 1915 and they fought at Loos. At The Battle of the Somme in 1916 they took heavy causalities and the following year of 1917 the Guards' fought at Ypres & Cambrai. In the final days of the Great War they were still fighting right up to The Hindenburg Line and by wars' end they had lost over 2.300 officer's & men including John Kipling, son of Rudyard Kipling In all the Irish Guards were awarded over 406 gallantry medals including 4 Victoria Crosses A very attractive O.R.'s cap badge, measuring approx 1.5" across with a lovely worn-back patina,and still with its original split-pin, this is a very good looking wee WW-I cap badge .
