This is the World’s 1st modern bimet coin, also called a ringed bimetallic, minted for the first time in 1982. It can be a challenge to find it in uncirculated condition. Technically, a few other coins before it had been made of more than one metal but these were usually "plugged" coins, that is, the center contained a small plug of a different kind of metal. Italy issued the world's first bimetal coin with a ring, a type that has since been duplicated in one way or another by dozens of nations. Even the USA finally issued a bimet in the year 2000, a $10 commemorative made of two different precious metals.This world first has a beautiful design. The obverse of Mercury, the god of abundance, communication and messages, was an important figure in ancient Roman religion. He is sculpted here by famous Italian artist Laura Cretara who also designed the 1993 100 Lire, among others.
