Dead Horse Gulch is located on the White Pass Yukon Railway's original route, which used to pass by the gulch. The trail is also known as the "Dead Horse Trail" because an estimated 3,000 horses died along it between 1897 and 1898. The horses were unable to handle the trail's physical demands, such as boggy mud, slippery rocks, and rough ground. Exhausted horses would become starved, fall over cliffs, or get stuck in mud.
