The Story behind the painting I first came to the Ranch House Cafe in 1964 on the way to a ski trip in Mammoth Mountain. It is in Olancha California 30 miles south of Lone Pine. It was in the middle of no where . At seven years old I thought I was in Disney Land. They had giant stuffed bear and old collectable cowboy items on the walls. I frequent it over many years until one day I arrived and said to the owner "I been coming here for the last 40 years". He told me people say that all the time. I asked if they had any post cards and he said they did not have them any more. I told him that I would do a painting that they could use as one. Once the painting was done, postcards were made. These post cards sold like hot cakes off the hot griddle. Soon my mother called to tell me that they had taken the painting and blew it up the size of a billboard for a sign . I told her " I guess I hit the big time now". Nothing could prepare me for what happened next. A guy came up to me at an art show and told me he stop a the cafe on his way to Hot August Nights in Reno Nevada. He told me it was the world's larges car show. He said he wanted to buy the painting if I could paint hot rod in it. I did it and it spread like dropping a match in a wheat field. I have done so many different versions to date. I thought I was dreaming when I was approached by Boyd Coddington who told me he made the ZZ Top cars and commissioned me to paint a Family portrait, his wife, and his custom project car named Cadzilla for ZZ Top. Boyd had a popular cable show called American Hot Rod on A&E. Cadzilla is owned by a member of ZZ Top, Billy Gibbons. I then met Billy Gibbons at my art show and told him the story. Sadly , the Ranch House Cafe closed permanently in 2018. I feel very good today contributing to keeping the memory alive. I have included pictures from the story I have told you. There are less than 500 prints available. If you get one, you will have a part of American History. The Ranch House Cafe opened in 1929 and now history. Heidi, Bama, and Sheryl ,if you come across this story, I want to thank you for your kindness . These were three ladies that made the place wonderful over the years.
