Vintage/Antique-1927 Bulova-17 Jewel-10K Gold Filled-44X17.5 mm-Art Deco Watch

Please come back often, as we are always buying more goodies to list on ebay. This listing is for a vintage, nearly antique, 1927, 10K yellow gold filled, Art Deco Bulova wristwatch. Watch has 17 jewels and the movement is 6AE. I'm not a watch expert, so I don't know exactly what that means, but collectors do. This watch was made before 1949, when Bulova started using letter and number date codes. This watch has a square shape inscribed on the movement, and that symbol, plus the watch's style, dates it to 1927. The inside of the case reads "Bulova, Fifth AVE, New York." There are also some servicing dates inscribed on the inside of the case but I can't tell exactly what they are. I do believe that one of them ends in the year 1939. I believe this watch was initially intended as a men's watch, as men's fashionable watch styles of the day were considerably smaller/narrower than current fashion styles. The watch case measures 43 mm in length, from tip of the lugs to other tip of the lugs, and it measures 17.5 mm in width. The lugs are designed to accommodates a 14mm band. By today's standards, this watch can easily work for a woman, and has, as it currently has a women's band attached. This band, however, doesn't work at all with the style of the watch and is far too thin at the lugs. I'm including in the listing a replacement band. The replacement is a new-old-stock, vintage, 14 mm, brown leather band by GUESS. The band is new in its case, but the plastic case is a bit dingy from age. The watch is unique in that it's so long, which is another reason I believe it was initially intended for a man. I've included a comparative photo of the watch with both a women's and men's watch from the 1920s/30s era. This watch is in the center. The women's watch is to the left and the men's to the right. All 3 of these watches were manufactured between 1925 and 1939, so they are contemporary to each other and make for good comparisons. This photo is only for comparison, as these other 2 watches are not part of the listing. This listing is for the center Bulova watch and the GUESS band. As far as the watch's condition goes, the watch looks lovely, with lots of potential, but it will require some repair/restoration in order to be worn. The watch is running at the time of writing this listing, and I have video to verify this, but the crown makes a grinding/skip sound about every couple of turns, which I don't like. So this should be addressed by a professional. The appearance of the gold filled case is lovely, and still golden in color, but there is wear to the outer gold shell along the edges and corners of the bottom of the case back, and wear along the lugs. There is a little wear on the edges of the bezel next to the crystal, but you need magnification to see this. The crystal is still clear to view the dial through, but under magnification you can see that there are lots of little scuffs along the surface. It does, in my opinion, still have use left, though. The crystal is also loose. This isn't a problem with the watch assembled, as the bezel holds the crystal in place, but when you take the watch apart, be careful that the crystal doesn't fall out. The watch dial is a beige color with gold numbers. It is very simple in design and simply says "Bulova" between the 1 and 11 markers. The dial is a little dingy from age but is in good condition. As previously stated, there is a women's gold filled stretch band currently attached to the watch. This band is clearly not original, nor does it match the watch. The replacement band will look much better. The edges of the watch case have some beautiful Victorian/Art Deco embossed designs along the edges. While the watch is running at the time of writing this listing, I can make no guarantees about its future working condition. This is a nearly 100 year old timepiece that requires attention. The new owner should factor repair and servicing costs into their decision to buy or not. You are buying this watch AS IS, so be sure to carefully view all photos. There is always some risk with purchasing aged mechanics when it comes to functioning. I have taken video of the watch running, and when it is purchased, I will check it again before shipping to see that it still runs. If it doesn't, I will let the buyer know and he or she may choose to cancel the purchase or renegotiate the price at this time. But as stated, this watch needs restoration, whether it runs or not, and one shouldn't purchase this without giving the cost of the restoration process consideration. Once the watch leaves my possession at the post office, the sell is final with no returns. This is a unique, very rare, very old watch, and it will make a lovely addition to one's vintage watch collection. While originally meant for a man, fashion styles have greatly changed since 1927, and the style and size of this watch can now work for men, women, or nonbinary alike. In my research, I did find one other Bulova from the same era almost identical to this, but without the scroll work on the case. This was on a different forum, but they wanted $350 for the watch, so this is a good opportunity to get a rare piece for a fair price and a great opportunity for collectors to bring a little history to the modern era.
