USPS? - 3" Bowl x 6 1/2"This ashtray measures 6 1/2" long with a 3" diameter x 1" deep bowl. The handle is 3 1/2" long x 1" wide. It features a single cigarette slot. A wide metal spring is attached with rivets that opens to about 1 1/2".This ashtray is designed to be clipped to the side of a table or shelf and easily re-positioned or removed.It is stamped "PROP. U. S. GOVT.". Marking of items like this was very common in the U.S. Military, so this may have been issued by a military branch. The U. S. Military encouraged smoking for many years and actually included cigarettes in ration packages at one time.An Ebayer has also indicated that this was used by the U.S. Postal Service, but I do not know if it may also have been used by other government agencies.The bottom is stamped "EX-CELL METAL PRODUCTS, INC - CHICAGO 4T - ILL." which would be the manufacturer.I cannot specifically date this piece but since a zip code was not used we know this was pre 1963. I have described it only as vintage.Condition: The ashtray has surface rusting in the bowl (See Photos) with some rusting along the edges of the spring and the back outside of the bowl.
