Grade 5 Up Berger sorts through the hype surrounding reports of ``flying saucers'' and alien space visitors to uncover a less glamorous, but probably truer interpretation. He describes, in the style of the tabloid writer, several famous encounters with UFOs and writer Erich Von Daniken's evidence of past alien visitors. For a few pages it almost seems like UFOs and aliens are real, but then Berger turns the tables by filling in the missing details or offering a simpler explanation. To show that scientists are indeed interested in finding real extraterrestrials, Berger includes a chapter on SETIthe Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence. The same SETI information can be found in other books, but it is the contrast between careful observation and wild speculation that drives home the point of this book. Line drawings and photographs are of varying quality. This book may not change many minds, but as long as science fiction belongs in libraries, so does this volume.
