Description: Vintage Tam O Shanter Large Beaded Coin Purse w Gorgeous Art Nouveau Lady Click images to enlarge Description Up for auction is a vintage Art Nouveau Tam O Shanter Large Beaded Coin Purse. Tam O Shanter is named after the Scottish hats that men wore. Apparently, the name of this coin purse derived from a poem Robert Burns wrote way back in 1790 about the main character named: Tam O Shanter. I understand these coin purses were very popular in the early 1900’s. This Art Nouveau Tam O Shanter is larger than a coin purse. Perhaps it became bigger when someone replaced the original coin purse material. The Art Nouveau period was 1890 to 1910. The beading is very brightly colored, and all beading appears to be intact. The color of the beading is navy blue, green, yellow, butterscotch, red, and white. The black cotton lining is attached along with the beaded purse to the metal portion of the bag. The interior of the purse has a plastic lining that is just sitting on top of the black purse lining. The purse is opened by pressing the button which is to the left of the lid opener/latch, and then pulling up on the latch. The width of the purse is just under 6 inches. The Art Nouveau Maiden is the “star” of this purse. This lovely lady is surrounded by flowers and is wearing a flower to cover her bosom. The metal is a mixture of silver and gold (brass like) coloration. The underside of the Art Noveau lady is a flat metal that cleaned up very nicely—it is nice and shiny now.
