Filigree is the delicate manipulation of thin strips of metal that are woven and twisted to form incredible texture and detail. The process of making filigree by hand is methodical and time-consuming, starting with stretching metal into thin, threadlike strips. This part requires a lot of patience and many jewelers still often do it by hand. Once the strips are formed, the jeweler works with one piece of threadlike metal at a time. Using heated tools to soften it, the jeweler will twist and manipulate the thread into the desired shape and design. Once the metal shape is complete, it’s soldered to the metal base piece. This process is repeated over and over again until the entire design is completed. WHAT DOES 925 MEAN? When a piece of jewelry has 925 stamped on it, almost like a tiny engraving, it means that it is 92.5% silver and 7.5% of another metal. This 925 is called a “hallmark” and indicates high-quality sterling silver. Other hallmarks of superior sterling silver are “STG", "S.S.", or "STER". If it is on your gold piece, you have a gold-plated sterling silver item that is made out of two high-quality metals - silver and gold. WHAT IS GOLD FILLED JEWELRY? Gold filled jewelry (aka rolled gold or gold bonded) is made by taking one or more thick sheets of solid gold (14K, 12K, 18K, etc) and wrapping them around a base metal under intense pressure. Unlike gold plated jewelry, gold filled jewelry has a commonly measurable and higher amount of actual gold in it. Like gold plated jewelry, some gold filled jewelry has a thicker layer of gold than other gold filled jewelry. Gold filled items are perfect if you’re looking for a material that is higher quality than gold plated as the layer of gold is singnificantly higher. Unlike gold plated, gold filled can last a lifetime if taken care of properly, and isn’t affected by water or hot weather. It is also tarnish-free under normal conditions. Gold filled jewelry are highly desirable for these reasons. COMMON MARKERS: + G.F. (stands for Gold Filled – U.S. Law requires that items marked this way be at least 1/20th gold by weight) + 1/20 12K G.F. (this is one of the most common marks) HOW DO I CLEAN MY VINTAGE JEWELRY? We deep clean all your jewelry before photographing and storing, but for future reference and long term care, below are instructions: + Mild soapy water with a very soft toothbrush or a soft cotton cloth.
