Description: Vintage Check - Third National Bank - April 24, 1880 - Scranton, Pa. - & revenue stampA Photo of the bank building is included._________________________________________ The Third National Bank was the 10th financial institution founded in Scranton. It opened for business on April 15, 1872 in a remodeled store room at 504 Lackawanna Avenue. The first President of the bank was Alfred Hand, a brilliant attorney who graduated from Yale. Among other things, Mr. Hand was the principal author of the charter of the City of Scranton, was secretary of the borough of Scranton and was eventually named Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania. As the business grew, the bank moved its quarters and in 1877 finally contracted for a building of its own at 118 Wyoming Avenue. Although it was organized just before the great panic of 1873, it achieved success and later the depressions of 1884, 1896, 1907, 1920, 1929 and 1937 left the institution unscathed. The building was enlarged and remodeled several times as the bank kept pace with growth in the community. The manufacture of railroad rails led to the establishment of railroad shops and in turn to other industry. Scranton became not only the world's wealthiest coal mining city, but also one whose products ranged from lace to locomotives. In 1917, having completely outgrown it's facilities, the building was demolished and a bigger building designed by Edward Langley was built at 120 Wyoming Ave. By 1964, plans were announced to build a new building at 130 Wyoming Avenue, next door to the old bank. A Company of Philadelphia designed the new building based on exhaustive studies of the downtown and surrounding areas. The building was completed in 1966 at a cost of $1.5 million. A newspaper article talking about the celebration of the bank's 100th anniversary in 1972 boasted it was the only completely new bank built in the Central City in upwards of 60 years.
