Description: Vintage Bronze Brutalist Fantasy abstraction of The Human Heart (?) - Dimensions are ; Bronze 'figure' 9" - high ,roughly 13 1/2" long , roughly 7" wide - the base measurements are 3" X 9 5/8" X 9 1/2" the overall height is 12". Material is toned raw bronze with a base of an unknown wood veneered in quarter-sawn oak with a golden oak tone. If your taste is brutalist sculpture - this piece , this mysterious work is for you. It is of raw unfinished, yet naturally age patinated bronze. It is truly subject to the eye of the beholder yet has a distinct if peculiar familiarity. It seems to be an interpretation of a human heart - a heart reaching out - perhaps in some turmoil - perhaps simply reaching out . There are 2 distinct lobes or 'chambers' with 2 'tendrils' ( arteries ? ) extending from the 'top'. Additionally there are 2 abstracted 'anthropomorphic heads' with only noses and mouths (agape) jutting from the 'body' of the piece and also a small hand under one or the tendril/arteries. Examine the photos, form your own impression. The bronze has a weight and 'balance' to it that evidently required a large square base to keep it upright. This base and the material it's veneered in extend the brutalist manner in which the work presents itself. We found this piece quite by accident in a very old bookstore which dealt in extremely old European books and manuscripts. The book seller was closing the doors after 91 years in the family business. This piece beckoned from a space behind the bookmans desk. He said his family had purchased it quite a while ago and that may put it in the Mid-Century period. We asked if it was for sale as well and though he was quite fond of it, he acquiesced, letting us purchase it. Is it calling out for love, is it expressing the pain of unrequited love , we don't know, there is no signature or markings. In attempting to research the piece it does resemble the style of a small number of known artists but no one we would feel comfortable in attributing it to, and indeed it may be from someone completely unknown. A mysterious work found in a magical and mysterious little shop on Chicagos Lakefront, we offer it to all - perhaps you know who created it and from whence it came or perhaps it intrigues you as it did us on that late Autumn day in Chicago.
