Not much research has been done on Hendergates but it is believed he stayed aboard the Rigel and was at Pearl Harbor.1. Air Mail envelope dated stamped 19 May 1938, San Diego, CA, with red stamp for World's First Sea Plane Flight addressed to Miss Helen Goodman. 2. Two page letter from Clarence G. Hendergates, USS Rigel, San Diego, CA, Repair Office to Miss Goodman. Letter is on U.S.S. Rigel, U.S. Destroyer Base, San Diego, California and is dated 19 May 1938.The USS Rigel was homported at San Diego pre-war. She moved with the fleet to Pearl Harbor where she survived the attack with slight damage. She later served in the Solomons and the Philippines.
