U.S. Submarines Polaris George Washington class SSBN Navy films 1960s DVD

Description: Polaris Submarines " width="100%" height="90" border="0"> Polaris Submarines DVD Video Description Loose Cannon is proud to preserve the USA's military history via its unique DVD film collections. Using a combination of U.S. Dept. of Defense archive films, combat footage, and period newsreels of the time, each film features actual wartime footage and or first-person accounts from those that were there. The first 'Polaris Submarines' were George Washington class subs modified to carry the Polaris ballistic nuclear missile, after dropping the earlier Jupiter missile. The commissioning of George Washington on 30 December 1959, the first submarine Polaris launch on 20 July 1960, and her first deterrent patrol November 1960 – January 1961 were the culmination of four years of intense effort. The George Washington-class were essentially Skipjack class submarines with a 130 foot missile compartment, inserted between the ship's control/navigation areas and the nuclear reactor compartment. Soon followed by the USS Theodore Roosevelt, USS Abraham Lincoln, USS Patrick Henry, and USS Robert E. Lee. Each of these served as part of the SSBN fleet until decommissioning in the early 1980s. Other Fleet Ballistic Missile sub classes that fielded the Polaris included the Ethan Allen-class (designed specifically to carry the Polaris A-2) and the Benjamin Franklin-class submarines which carried the Polaris A-3.
