"Uppity Women of Medieval Times" Sword Dueler Ninja Arab Queen Saint Monk Pix

Description: Uppity Women of Medieval Times by Vicki Leon. NOTE: We have 75,000 books in our library, almost 10,000 different titles. Odds are we have other copies of this same title in varying conditions, some less expensive, some better condition. We might also have different editions as well (some paperback, some hardcover, oftentimes international editions). If you don’t see what you want, please contact us and ask. We’re happy to send you a summary of the differing conditions and prices we may have for the same title. DESCRIPTION: Hardcover with dustjacket. Publisher: MJF Books Press; (1997) 241 pages. From blacksmiths, bankers, plague-ridders, and sheep thieves to secret agents, pirates, holy women, and holy terrors, medieval women around the world used wits, wiles, patrons, and networking to make a winning hand of their lives. Among the women you'll meet: 1) Chiyome, rent-a-ninja entrepreneur in sixteenth century Japan. 2) Zubayda, an Arab queen with a Martha Stewart toucher. Her engineering projects and her parties made history. 3) English educator Hilda of Whitby, who founded monasteries, promoted local poets, and became a saint, all with equal panache. 4) Intrepid bear-slayer Maggie de la Roque, Canada's own Robinson Crusoe. 5) Nun turned top-gun Catalina de Erauso, who dueled, drank, and cross-dressed her way through Spain and South America. CONDITION: LIKE NEW. Unread (but blemished) hardcover w/dustjacket. Barnes & Noble/MJF Books (1998) 241 pages. The book is clean and unread, but evidences modest edge and corner shelfwear to the dustjacket, and there's a prominent, handwritten birthday gift dedication on the front free page (the first unprinted, blank page within the book). Except for that handwritten gift dedication the inside of the book is pristine; clean, crisp, (otherwise) unmarked, unmutilated, tightly bound, unambiguously unread. Outside the dustjacket evidences modest edge and corner shelfwear which does however include several closed (neatly mended) edge tears. To the top edge of the front side of the dustjacket there's a 3/8 inch closed edge tear at the spine head, then a 3/4 inch closed edge tear nearby, the two edge tears connected by a 3/4 inch crease (the two edge tears created a flap). There's also a 1 inch closed edge tear to the back side of the dustjacket at the open corner of the lower edge. All three edge tears were carefully repaired from the underside of the dustjacket, and so are not as prominent as one might expect given the description of them. Beneath the dustjacket the quarter cloth covers are clean and undamaged. Except for the handwritten gift dedication on the first free page, the overall condition of the book is not too distant from what might pass as "new" from an open-shelf book store (such as Barnes & Noble) wherein patrons are permitted to browse open stock, and so otherwise "new" books are often a bit "shopworn" exhibiting modest shelfwear and/or cosmetic blemishes (such as the minor closed edge tears to the dustjacket) the consequence of frequently being repeatedly shelved and re-shelved. PUBLISHER REVIEW: REVIEW: This guide to the feisty women of medieval times profiles 200 of these fair and unfair damsels from around the world. There's English rose Hilda of Whitby, Viking leader Aud the Deep-Minded and Wu Zhao of China, who chose to concubine, connive, murder and machiavelli her way to a 50 year reign. From the Author: "Add these cheeky women to your vocabulary; fiat uppity! These women, their voices, their deeds, and their daring, delighted me as I discovered them. I hope you get the same burst of energy from meeting them, too." PROFESSIONAL REVIEWS: REVIEW: Bask in the feminist glory of daring damsels, from blacksmiths and troubadours to holy women and holy terrors, who dazzled the Dark Ages and rocked the Renaissance. Meet such familiar world-shakers; 200 in all, as Elizabeth I, Joan of Arc, and Abelard's darling Heloise; as well as lesser-known iconoclasts like Cataline de Erauso, a nun turned top-gun who dueled, drank and cross-dressed her away through Spain and South America, or Zubayda, an Arab queen with a Martha Stewart touch! And let's not forget Isabel, Queen of Castile, patron of Columbus, and wife to Ferdinand. Her marriage motto was "They rule with equal rights and both excel, Isabel as much as Ferdinand, Ferdinand as much as Isabel. REVIEW: The author of "Uppity Women of Ancient Times" makes history sizzle once again with insightful and witty portraits and accounts of women, notorious, courageous, and unusual who both defined and defied their times. Exceptionally researched and irresistibly entertaining, "Uppity Women of Medieval Times" gives readers a feminist, and humorous perspective on little-known great women of history. REVIEW: Historian Leon provides a lively history of a middle ages period filled not with homemakers and princes; but with feisty women who defied cultural expectations and built powerful lives. This is actually a series of biographical sketches of selected women; from an early Italian physician who developed a virginity-restoration technique to a fashion designer. REVIEW: From pulchritudinous pirates to swashbuckling saints, Vicki Leon astounds and inspires with her tales of females who kicked posterior back when the proverbial glass ceiling was made of lead. Smart, sassy, and superbly researched, "Uppity Women of Medieval Times" showcases Leon's talent for ferreting out the humor amid the horror, and renders semi-ancient history as compelling as tomorrow morning's headlines. REVIEW: A welcome book that brings women to life in ways that make us laugh and understand their great courage and ingenuity in a time when male dominance and barbarity were the order of the day. Ironic, irreverent, informative. A real pleasure to read. READER REVIEWS: REVIEW: Everyone has heard of the famous females Brunhilda and Joan of Arc as well as ladies like the Countess Bathory and Mary, Queen of Scots. However, there are scores of interesting women in history and author Vicki Leon proves this over and over in her Uppity Women book series. After reading "Uppity Women of Medieval Times", I became an immediate fan of Leon's work. She brings a fresh approach to history with her series and I highly recommend all of her "Uppity Women" books as both educational and entertaining reading. The books also make excellent gifts for the Uppity Women in your life! REVIEW: I have read the entire "uppity" series. Leon writes with such humor and personality that she makes each woman's life come alive in only a few short paragraphs. Any woman will feel empowered by these blurbs about women who were strong, independent, brave, courageous, and vastly intelligent hundreds, and as in the other uppity books, thousands of years, before women's lib. These weren't women who were born before their time, they were born at the exact right time to help change the world they were living in. All modern women should be thankful that women like these paved the way for us all. REVIEW: I enjoyed "Uppity Women of Ancient Times" very much, so I was very pleased to discover this follow-up volume, another collection of brief biographies of interesting women. In this volume I found many characters I already knew, and many more I did not. The stories of the women are amusingly told, and there is a bibliography at the back for those interested in learning more. Overall, a very entertaining read. REVIEW: I love this book! It's fun to read, and I like that Ms. Leon uses "modern" language to describe these women. What I like best about it, though, is that it's about women (men are mentioned only if they add to "her" story). I'm working on family genealogy and have found my way into the Middle Ages. Time after time I've run into a family where the wife or mother is "unknown", or only has a first name. In this book, I've found five women, with names and dates, to add to my family tree! It's a great source of information and details, as well as being entertaining. REVIEW: This was the first "Uppity" book by Leon that I read. It's great reading for many reasons. The mini-biographies are well written, get right to why anyone should care about the place of these women in history, and are formatted in such a way that a person can read one bio or twenty in a sitting, depending on how much time the person has. Also, Leon's sense of humor keeps the bios interesting and makes for easier reading. REVIEW: This was the first of the "Uppity" women books that I read. In my opinion it is the best. It's so funny! You can't help but love it. I always ship books Media Mail in a padded mailer. This book is shipped FOR FREE via USPS INSURED media mail (“book rate”). The shipment will include free USPS Delivery Confirmation (you might be able to update the status of your shipment on-line at the USPS Web Site and free insurance coverage). If you are concerned about a little wear and tear to the book in transit, I would suggest a boxed shipment - it is an extra $1.00. Whether via padded mailer or box, we will give discounts for multiple purchases. International orders are welcome, but shipping costs are substantially higher. Most international orders cost an additional $12.99 to $33.99 for an insuredshipment in a heavily padded mailer, and typically includes some form of rudimentary tracking and/or delivery confirmation (though for some countries, this is only available at additional cost). There is also a discount program which can cut postage costs by 50% to 75% if you’re buying about half-a-dozen books or more (5 kilos+). Rates and available services vary a bit from country to country. You can email or message me for a shipping cost quote, but I assure you they are as reasonable as USPS rates allow, and if it turns out the rate is too high for your pocketbook, we will cancel the sale at your request. ADDITIONAL PURCHASES do receive a VERY LARGE discount, typically about $5 per book (for each additional book after the first) so as to reward you for the economies of combined shipping/insurance costs. Your purchase will ordinarily be shipped within 48 hours of payment. We package as well as anyone in the business, with lots of protective padding and containers. All of our shipments are sent via insured mail so as to comply with PayPal requirements. We do NOT recommend uninsured shipments, and expressly disclaim any responsibility for the loss of an uninsured shipment. Unfortunately the contents of parcels are easily “lost” or misdelivered by postal employees – even in the USA. That’s why all of our shipments include a USPS delivery confirmation tag; or are trackable or traceable, and are insured. We do offer U.S. Postal Service Priority Mail, Registered Mail, and Express Mail for both international and domestic shipments, as well United Parcel Service (UPS) and Federal Express (Fed-Ex). Please ask for a rate quotation. We will accept whatever payment method you are most comfortable with. If upon receipt of the item you are disappointed for any reason whatever, I offer a no questions asked return policy. Send it back, I will give you a complete refund of the purchase price (less our original shipping costs). Most of the items I offer come from the collection of a family friend who was active in the field of Archaeology for over forty years. However many of the items also come from purchases I make in Eastern Europe, India, and from the Levant (Eastern Mediterranean/Near East) from various institutions and dealers. Though I have always had an interest in archaeology, my own academic background was in sociology and cultural anthropology. After my retirement however, I found myself drawn to archaeology as well. Aside from my own personal collection, I have made extensive and frequent additions of my own via purchases on Ebay (of course), as well as many purchases from both dealers and institutions throughout the world - but especially in the Near East and in Eastern Europe. I spend over half of my year out of the United States, and have spent much of my life either in India or Eastern Europe. In fact much of what we generate on Yahoo, Amazon and Ebay goes to support The Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, as well as some other worthy institutions in Europe connected with Anthropology and Archaeology. I acquire some small but interesting collections overseas from time-to-time, and have as well some duplicate items within my own collection which I occasionally decide to part with. Though I have a collection of ancient coins numbering in the tens of thousands, my primary interest is in ancient jewelry. My wife also is an active participant in the "business" of antique and ancient jewelry, and is from Russia. I would be happy to provide you with a certificate/guarantee of authenticity for any item you purchase from me. There is a $2 fee for mailing under separate cover. Whenever I am overseas I have made arrangements for purchases to be shipped out via domestic mail. If I am in the field, you may have to wait for a week or two for a COA to arrive via international air mail. But you can be sure your purchase will arrive properly packaged and promptly - even if I am absent. And when I am in a remote field location with merely a notebook computer, at times I am not able to access my email for a day or two, so be patient, I will always respond to every email.
