Crane also created well-executed renderings of "Little Boy Blue" for wallpaper in 1875, as well as, the same beautifully painted image on THIS PARTICULAR tile (thought to be circa 1874). This historic tile clearly depicts Crane’s encircled monogram in the bottom right-hand corner (See photo)! About MAW & Co.:Established in 1950, the manufacturer of this exquisite tile, "Maw and Company," opened their first factory in Worcester. In 1862 the company moved to Broseley, Shropshire in the Ironbridge, and finally in 1883 to the Benthall Works in Jackfield, Shropshire, where this lovely tile was produced. Fabricating over 20 million tiles annually, this new factory became the world's largest producer of decorative and utilitarian ceramic tiles! The Bottom Edge of the Tile Shows Remnants of the Original Underglaze Inscription Which Once Showcased the Script Written Date of Production, as well as, the Words, "Maw & Co. Benthall Works Jackfield Salop” This Wonderful Piece of Art Measures Approximately 6" x 6" Square and is Perfect for displaying on a stand, for framing or simply to incorporate as a focal point into an inlaid tile layout in any room, particularly a child's nursery! Good Antique Condition:No blatant issues or restoration visible! There is one small surface chip to the upper left front edge that I have to strain to see (shown in photo 4 under "EXTREME MAGNIFICATION" and some very tiny fits to the edges (also not readily noticeable, but photographed in photo #5 under "EXTREME MAGNIFICATION" for accuracy) – Not surprising though for surviving some 143 years! The reverse side has the classic "Maw and Co." diagonal back mark with the relief, "MAW & CO" above "BENTHALL WORKS," along with the round "FLOREAT SALOPIA" relief mark in the center, as well as the diagonal "JACKFIELD SALOP" mark situated at the bottom of the tile. This Timeless and Beloved Rhyme Goes Like This:"Little Boy Blue, come blow me your horn; The sheep’s in the meadow, the cow’s in the corn. Where’s the little boy that looks after the sheep? He’s under the haycock, fast asleep." Please email with any questions prior to transaction.THANK YOU!
