It contains 3 of 4 illustrations (the frontispiece is missing).Excerpt: "Max was the first to speak again."Fräulein Una,” he said very quietly, “ I know that you believe in high ideals of life. You told me long ago that you thought we should each of us hold fast to our ideals, whatever they might be, and never let them go. Now it is just here where you can help me.”"Una felt her courage returning and looked up with interest to hear what the artist had to say, as he continued “I, too, have had an ideal before my eyes for many years, so long that I can hardly remember a time when I was without it- -an ideal of the true artist's wife, a woman of noble heart and tender feeling, who had room in her breast for high dreams and great purposes, a woman who, like Frau Luthardt, could love her husband's art better than she loved himself, who would help him to choose the best and aim at the highest all through his life. Now, at length, I have found my ideal woman, and it is in your power to inake that dream of mine a reality. Fräulein Una, I am not worthy to be your knight, to have you for my angel, but, at least, I love you as I shall never love another girl. For God's sake, do not send me away!”The Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge (SPCK) is a UK-based Christian charity. Founded in 1698 by Thomas Bray, it has worked for over 300 years to increase awareness of the Christian faith in the UK and across the world.A fine addition for your bookshelf!Condition: A little wear with light soiling to the covers and lightly bumped corners, missing the front endpaper and frontispiece, name at top of first page of text, some foxing throughout (heavier at the illustrations), overall a good servicable reading copy with a solid binding. We have been sellers of antiquarian books for over 20 years, and our experience helps ensure quality descriptions of our rare and collectable books. Be assured that we want your experience with Rivendell Antiquarian Books to be enjoyable and problem free. We believe that it is a travesty to simply throw away a used book when there is little or nothing wrong with it - we believe in giving each book the chance of finding a new home. We appreciate the impact a good book can have. We know the excitement of a new page turner, or the familiar joy of an old favorite, and we find satisfaction in putting older, and often scarce books in the hands of people who have the same love for old books that we do.Customer Service:Rivendell Antiquarian Books is committed to ensuring each customer is entirely satisfied with their puchase and our service. If you have any issues or concerns please contact us and we will be more than happy to help. Our books have been inspected carefully by hand by experienced book valuers to ensure the condition description is as accurate as possible for this exact copy pictured. If you have questions about the book before or after purchasing, please feel free to contact us!Packaging:We take pride in packaging our books for safe delivery, and if you check our feedback, you will see this reflected in the comments of many pleased customers. For nearly all of our books, we use a specially designed boxing system from IPS (Inovative Packaging Solutions) located in York, PA. These media shipping boxes are designed to conform to the size of the book, securing it and preventing it from bumping around during shipping. The end result is a box which provides a double thickness of cardboard covering the front and back of the book; actually almost like a box within a box. The outer layer of cardboard extends beyond the ends of the inner "box" which very efficiently protects the corners of the book from being bumped and damaged by the sometimes rough handling packages receive in transit. In addition we place the book in a plastic bag to help guard against moisture if a package is left out in the elements.Delivery: We aim to get all books shipped within 24 hours of order except on weekends. We can't control the delivery time once a book leaves our hands, but most of the time USPS is prompt in delivery, and the expected delivery time given by eBay is usually fairly accurate. Because we use media mail to keep costs down, it does take a little longer for delivery, and occasionally packages get delayed in the mail system. If for some reason your order has not arrived within the expected time frame, please get in contact with us so that we can try to help you.
