I'm updating my photos of this shell, and thought I'd include a little note to help clear up some of the identification confusion that surrounds three Hawaiian cowries, cypraea schilderorum, sulcidentata and leviathan. Of course if you live in Hawaii, you probably already know this, but surprisingly, most folks don't live in Hawaii, so I imagine this will help quite a few people... The big thing to look at when it comes to this group of Hawaiian cowries is the color of their mouths. Cypraea sulcidentata has a cream colored base and mouth, Cypraea schilderorum has a white mouth, (something more easily seen if you hold a sulci and a schilderorum side by side) and Cypraea leviathan, often mistaken for sulcis, is a very easy shell to tell from the other two---just look at its mouth, it's purple. I have included a comparison photo, because as stand alone shells, they all look remarkably alike until you turn them over. Now then, this particular beauty was collected at Fort Kam reef, Oahu, Hawaii, in 10-15 feet of water under a piece of dead coral by someone getting to do what I never got to do, which was go snorkeling at Ft. Kam reef. I can't remember how many times there was a note in the Hawaiian Shell News in the just found! section of the magazine that mentioned Ft. Kam reef as where someone had just found a new rare beauty, and that included many shells that were normally found only by scuba diving in fifty feet of water, not the 3 to 10 feet of water one snorkeled in at Ft. Kam! Cypraea tessellata, semiplota, chinensis, and deer cowries, (rarely found in Hawaii) just to name a few! It was shell collecting paradise, yet I never made it there, and as you can tell, that little fact still bugs me fifty years later...huh! About this shell, it is rarely offered for sale, (it's easier to find a cypraea tessellata for sale than a schilderorum...) and the specimens offered are rarely as fine as this one. In fact, as the video shows, in my opinion this is the nicest one on eBay at the moment, and of course I would say that, but it's true. Anyhow, this much is certain---you will look far and wide to find a gorgeous schilderorum with the bragging rights this shell has, and it will look terrific on your shelf, too! A rarely offered ultra-perfect shell for a first-rate collection... As for normal disclaimers and such... I have tried my best to make sure the photos are accurate color-wise, but as everyone knows, color is a... Between my phone changing the color due to the color of the shell, the background, the time of day AND it changing when I post it on eBay, and then knowing that your phone or laptop is going to do weird things to it color-wise too, well, let's just say, I tried my best, and I hope you will think so too when you hold your new beauty in your hands for the first time.I'm learning, but it is slow going, I'll tell you!
