The second release from the Perth Mint’s Great Russian Minds series celebrates the 150th anniversary of the birth of short story writer and playwright Anton Chekhov. Born in the port city of Taganrog on January 29, 1860, Chekhov began writing as a means of supporting his family while he also studied to become a doctor. He is most famously remembered for four great plays - The Seagull, Uncle Vanya, Three Sisters and The Cherry Orchard - as well as more than 600 short-stories, many of which are considered masterpieces. Anton Chekhov Anton Pavlovich Chekhov was a Russian short-story writer, playwright and physician, considered to be one of the greatest short-story writers in the history of world literature. His career as a dramatist produced four classics and his best short stories are held in high esteem by writers and critics. Chekhov practiced as a medical doctor throughout most of his literary career, saying, "Medicine is my lawful wife, and literature is my mistress." Chekhov renounced the theater after the disastrous reception of The Seagull in 1896; but the play was revived to acclaim in 1898 by Constantin Stanislavski's Moscow Art Theatre, which subsequently also produced Uncle Vanya and premiered Chekhov’s last two plays, Three Sisters and The Cherry Orchard. These four works present a special challenge to the acting ensemble as well as to audiences, because in place of conventional action Chekhov offers a "theater of mood" and a "submerged life in the text." Chekhov had at first written stories only for the money, but as his artistic ambition grew, he made formal innovations which have influenced the evolution of the modern short story. His originality consists in an early use of the stream-of-consciousness technique, later adopted by James Joyce and other modernists, combined with a disavowal of the moral finality of traditional story structure. He made no apologies for the difficulties this posed to readers, insisting that the role of an artist was to ask questions, not to answer them. This second release in the Great Russian Minds program depicts a stunning, full color portrait of Anton Chekhov, adopted from a famous oil painting. The struck devices depict three touchstones of his life (from top): two seagulls (denoting his first drama); the Moscow Arts Theatre, which staged The Seagull in 1898; and comedy and tragedy masks, universal symbols of the theater. The coins in the Great Russian Minds program, with their projected release dates, are: • Playwright & Novelist Nikolai Gogol (Born 200 years ago in 1809) • Author & Playwright Anton Chekhov (2010 - Born 150 years ago in 1810) Please see the presentation lower on this page for more information about Tuvalu and its association with Australia. Its nearest neighbors are Kiribati, Samoa and Fiji. It is comprised of four reef islands and five true atolls. Its population of 11,992 makes it the third-least populated independent country in the world, with only Vatican City and Nauru having fewer inhabitants. It is also the second-smallest member by population of the United Nations. In terms of physical land size, at just 10 square miles Tuvalu is the fourth smallest country in the world, larger only than the Vatican City, Monaco and Nauru. The first inhabitants of Tuvalu were Polynesian people, who arrived about 3000 years go. The islands came under Great Britain's sphere of influence in the late 19th century. The Ellice Islands were administered by Britain as part of a protectorate from 1892 to 1916 and as part of the Gilbert and Ellice Islands Colony from 1916 to 1974. In 1974 the Ellice Islanders voted for separate British dependency status as Tuvalu, separating from the Gilbert Islands which became Kiribati upon independence. Tuvalu became fully independent within The Commonwealth in 1978. with Queen Elizabeth II as titular head of state. Because Tuvalu has few natural resources it has been dependent in recent years upon aid from larger, more developed nations, including Australia, New Zealand and the United States. The Perth Mint of Australia is officially commissioned by the government of Tuvalu to produce legal tender coinage for the island nation.
