Description: RailroadTreasures offers the following item: Trams in West London by D.W. Willoughby & E.R. Oakley SC 1978 44 Pages Trams in West London by D.W. Willoughby & E.R. Oakley SC 1978 44 Pages Soft Cover 1978 44 Pages A Pictorial Souvenir FOREWORD This, the third in the series of picture stories of the London tramways, takes the reader to the western outposts; to the part of (now) Greater London, that was, until the mid-1930's, divided into two parts, comprising outer urban areas and semi-rural pastures in Middlesex and Surrey. The area under review was shared by the London United Tramways and the western section of the Metropolitan Electric Tramways, with just a little of it dominated by the London County Council. In 1933, the whole lot was taken into the operational orbit of the London Passenger Transport Board, who speedily set about scrapping the trams, substituting trolleybuses in their stead, having as the precedent for this the London United Tramways trolleybus conversion scheme in the Kingston area in 1931. By the end of 1936 all the trams on the former LUT and MET routes had gone, to be followed in the autumn of 1937 by the ex-LCC services in the Hammersmith and Putney areas. In a similar way to the principle adopted in the previous publications. the reader will be conveyed over the routes in a progressive way, mainly geographical, but with an element of random wandering also. A system map is included to assist in these journeyings. As all the photographs are over 40 years old and, as cameras and films were not, technically, up to the standards expected in the 1970's, some of the photographs are lacking in clarity and contrast. It is felt, however, that their historical interest will more than make up for any slight deficiency in presentation. The two final sections of this series, covering north and east London, are in course of preparation, and it is hoped that these, in conjunction with the two published on south-east and south-west London, will provide the reader with a comprehensive picture story of London's trams. A proportion of the profits from the sale of this booklet will go to the funds of the London County Council Tramways Trust, to be used in the continuation of restoration work on London tramcars in which the Trust has a leading part.
