Description: Anthony Terrell Smith (born March 3, 1966), best known by his stage name Tone Lōc (/toʊn loʊk/), is an American rapper.[1] He is known for his raspy voice, his hit songs "Wild Thing" and "Funky Cold Medina", for which he was nominated for a Grammy Award, and for being featured in "We're All in the Same Gang", a collaborative single by the West Coast Rap All-Stars. Lōc-ed After Dark is the debut studio album by American rapper Tone Lōc.[2][3] It was released on January 23, 1989, via Delicious Vinyl.[4] The album was produced by Matt Dike, Michael Ross, and the Dust Brothers. It reached the number-one spot on the Billboard 200 chart and was certified double platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America.[4] Lōc-ed After Dark was the first album by a Black rap musician to top the chart.[5] It featured three singles: "Wild Thing", "Funky Cold Medina", and "I Got It Goin' On".[6]The album's cover is based on Donald Byrd's 1963 album A New Perspective[7] and also features the headlight of a Jaguar e-type sports car.Critical reception[edit]Professional ratingsReview scoresSourceRatingAllMusic[8]Robert ChristgauB+[9]Los Angeles Daily News[10]MusicHound R&B: The Essential Album Guide[11]Number One[12]RapReviews8/10[13]Record Collector[14]The Rolling Stone Album Guide[15]The New York Times noted that the music "ranges from bare hard-core street rap to rock-rap fusion".[16] The Washington Post wrote that "Matt Dike and Michael Ross underpin Loc's minor-league raps with a stripped-down but eclectic sound that is consistently propulsive."[17] The Boston Globe called Lōc-ed After Dark a "party-till-you-drop debut album."[18] The Los Angeles Daily News determined that the album "may feature the most artful sampling yet heard on record."[10]Track listing[edit]No.TitleWriter(s)Producer(s)Length1."On Fire" (Remix)Anthony SmithMatt DikeMichael RossDikeRoss4:502."Wild Thing"SmithMarvin YoungDikeRossDikeRoss4:233."Lōc'ed After Dark"SmithDikeDikeRoss5:114."I Got It Goin' On"SmithDikeDikeRoss4:325."Cutting Rhythms"SmithDikeRossJohn KingMichael SimpsonThe Dust Brothers5:116."Funky Cold Medina"YoungDikeRossDikeRoss4:087."Next Episode"SmithDikeKingSimpsonThe Dust Brothers4:018."Cheeba Cheeba"SmithDikeRossDikeRoss6:069."Don't Get Close"SmithDikeKingSimpsonThe Dust Brothers3:4010."Lōc'in on the Shaw"DikeDikeRoss4:2211."The Homies"SmithDikeRossDikeRoss3:52
