Description: The Satires of Decimus Junius Juvenalis and of Aulus Persius Flaccus, translated into English Verse by John Dryden, and others, to which is prefixed a dedicatory Discourse concerning the Original and Progress of Satire. Vol I. Printed in London at the Stanhope Press, by Whittingham and Rowland in 1812. Pages up to 144 the satires are from Juvenalis, from 145 to 210 the satires from Persius can be found. Juvenal’s Satires provide a fascinating window onto the social melting-pot that was early second century CE Rome. But they also hold up a mirror to those whose feelings of alienation and disempowerment produce a bitter distortion of that society. The leather bound book cover is in remarkable condition considering its age. The pages however are browned, somewhat foxed, uneven on the edges (see pictures), but otherwise fine. There is some pencil writing from a previous book seller.I actually cannot find an example of this particular book anywhere with its green leather bounding, red leather with gilt embossed letters on the spine.
