The Riddle of the Sphinx - Attic Kylix of the Painter Oedipus in Vatican Museum

Description: OEDIPUS AND THE SPHINXThe original item is located in the Vatican Museum. Sphinx victims in order to avoid being torn to pieces were challenged to answer the following riddle "What creature is two-legged, three-legged and four-legged and weakest of limb when it walks in more than two legs?" Her victims were many but Oedipus gained the throne of Thebes by answering the riddle and thus freeing the city from the terrible monster. His answer "Man, who begins life in all fours and ends life leaning on a cane." Red-figure vase painting is one of the most important styles of figural Greek vase painting. It developed in Athens around 530 BC and remained in use until the late 3rd century BC. It replaced the previously dominant style of Black-figure vase painting within a few decades. Its modern name is based on the figural depictions in red color on a black background, in contrast to the preceding black-figure style with black figures on a red background. It was Hand made in Greece, diameter is approximately 8 inches. Our clay items are Hand painted and not fastly made, nor are they cheaply made of substitute materials such as resin. We stick to the materials and methods used by ancient Greeks and use only top quality ceramics and paints. Do not expect "perfection" as if these clay vases was not mass produced from a machine like many are, but by hand.(57)Details:Condition: New, Copy, Handmade in Greece.Material: ClayHeight: 10cm (4")Diameter: 21cm (8.2")Width including handles: 27cm (10.5") Note that sizes may vary a little cause everything is Hand Made
