Description: THE LIFE OF A REGIMENT The History of the Gordon Highlanders Volume VI. 1945-1970 CHRISTOPHER SINCLAIR-STEVENSON LEO COOPER: LONDON 1974 1st edition. 24 x 16 cm. xiii + 177 pp + b/w photo plates. HB/DJ 1945 and the end of the Second World War found The Gordon Highlanders scarred both physically and mentally. The Regiment had lost nearly 2,500 killed or died of wounds. It had suffered the total destruction of three battalions, most traumatically of the original 2nd Battalion at Singapore when British supremacy in the Far East perished abruptly and for ever. And yet the succeeding quarter-century was to prove, though less bloody, perhaps even more testing. No period in the history of the British Army has forced more drastic changes—indeed a more complete reconstruction. For, although Britain was not to be involved in anything beyond a local conflict, and only, in Korea, in a major campaign, the threat of nuclear holocaust would always be present. During these 25 tense and dramatic years, the Gordon Highlanders lost their 2nd Battalion but, by the skin of their teeth, retained their regimental status. They served in Malaya, Cyprus, Kenya, Swaziland and Borneo, dodging the sniper's bullet and the terrorist bomb, endeavouring to introduce some calm and sanity to situations fraught with passion; they also held the Cold War line in Germany, and still found time for ceremonial and pageantry in Edinburgh and London, and at Balmoral. This sixth volume of the History of the Gordon Highlanders attempts to convey not only the acute dangers inevitable in the life of a soldier, but also the lighter moments, the peculiarities of the Gordons which differentiate them in some subtle way from other regiments. If it succeeds in this task, that is only a tribute to the officers and men who feature in the pages of this book.
