Hermann August Seger (26 December 1839 †– 30 October 1893) was a German silicate chemist.Life[edit | edit source]Edit source]After completing his doctorate in Rostock, he worked out the basics of the constitution of clays and systematized the ceramic raw materials according to their properties (Seger formula). He developed the Seger cones, small pointed pyramids for measuring high temperatures, named after him, as well as Seger porcelain, a soft porcelain that was fired at lower temperatures and made new glazes such as sang-de-bœuf possible. In 1878 he founded and headed the Chemical-Technical Research Institute of the Royal Porcelain Manufactory in Berlin. There he developed a soft porcelain that was patented in 1880 and called "Seger porcelain" from 1882. It was an imitation of East Asian porcelain, was fired at lower temperatures and allowed iridescent glazes. As a porcelain brand, it received the KPM sceptre with "Sgr. P". [1] In 1885, Hermann Seger was appointed titular professor by the Prussian Ministry of Spiritual, Educational and Medical Affairs. [2]Although Seger was a chemist, his experimental pieces were also artistically recognized. [3] The German Ceramic Society awards the Seger Plaque in his memory.[4] This two-volume set, "The Collected Writings of Hermann August Seger," is a classic reprint published in 1902 by the Chemical Publishing Company.
