Description: For your consideration is a PRESS MOLDED BOTTLE BY TATSUZO SHIMAOKA (1911 - 2007). It is a sublime calm light grey and cream color. There is an interesting small iron deposit burn out on one side (see photo #1, 3 and 4 on lower left). Shimaoka dug his own local clay during the early part of his career which often contained iron that burned out during the firing and is usually considered as positive, not a defect, as it represents the source of the clay. The Jogon Zogan Rope Impression design is what I refer to as 'Honeycomb' and is one of four frequently used patterns by Shimaoka. There are no chips or cracks. It is signed in an inner corner of the foot which is very difficult to see as the glaze has filled it in ( see photo 6 - upper left corner). If the light is somewhat low, one can just see the faint outline of the cypher. The box lid is also signed. The box lid was damaged in shipment when the bottle shifted inside the wooden box. The lid's four pieces were glued together so, although damaged, it is complete (see photos 3, 4 and 5). I will pack the box and bottle separately but in the same outer box when I ship to avoid further damage. This is a fairly large piece at 9 5/8" (24 cm) Height x 4" (10 cm) Square. (Photos 6 - 12 are some other listings showing work by Shimaoka, Marguerite Wildenhain, F. Carlton Ball, David Stewart, David Leach and William Chappelow). (C - 434)
