This one is based on a clever and boldly colored 1990 Swatch, The Stoplight, and our remix features a number of firsts for the Sistem51 lineup: a semi-transparent case, crown, and strap; a cut-out dial that exposes the pointer-date disc below; and a direct "remixed" relationship to a vintage model. While some of our previous collaborations with Swatch have tended toward monochromatic colorways, for the STOPLIGHT NEON REMIX we embraced the saturated colors that have defined the spirit of Swatch since 1983, when the brand burst onto the scene and essentially democratized watch collecting, including creating watches for children when Flik Flak launched in 1987. While decades seem to start wholly anew every ten years, the truth is a little more complicated. In 1990, when the inspiration for the SWATCH SISTEM51 HODINKEE STOPLIGHT NEON REMIX was released, the aesthetics of 1980s pop fashions were slowly transforming from pastels and soft grays with pops of neon toward the fully saturated colorways that came to dominate the first half of the 1990s. We might even say that the original Stoplight Swatch of 1990 was a transitional piece, one still infused with 1980s New Wave fashion sensibilities but not yet laden with the flannel-forward aesthetics of early-1990s Grunge. However we frame it up, we found the original Stoplight abundantly fun to "remix" into a modern and sophisticated Sistem51 model. The tennis-ball neon yellow we chose for the seconds hand and date indicator playfully pops off the dial, but is slight enough to allow the more subdued blue and white colorway to play a versatile role among any number of outfits. The matte semi-transparent blue case, crown, and strap pair easily with jeans and tees, gym wear, casual dresses, today's high-tech semi-casual suiting, your favorite hoodie, and much more. The SWATCH SISTEM51 HODINKEE STOPLIGHT NEON REMIX is truly versatile, fun, sporty, and smart-looking. In contrast to a traditional date aperture that shows one day at a time, a pointer-date complication offers a full view of the month and one's place in it. A seemingly subtle difference, pointer-dates are known to offer a unique – and some say calming – perspective on the month. We love how a pointer date seems to suggest an abundance of time, and we do take some comfort in that. We also just enjoy the layout of the 31 days around the dial, and how that time-scale syncopates against the standard 60-second track on the angled rehaut, this in dark and light blue hues. The perforated dial further suggests the layers of interlocking divisions of time we use in our daily lives. The exposed disc in gradient blue, with its pop of neon yellow, takes an entire month to make its trip around the dial, while the neon seconds hand rushes around every minute. Through the clear caseback window, those layered time divisions are mirrored in the exposed ratios of the intermeshing gears known as the "going train." The Sistem 51 Stoplight Neon Remix will inspire curiosity and wonder among new watch enthusiasts and seasoned collectors, alike. All told, the Sistem 51 Spotlight Neon Remix offers a rather complex meditation on time, one that considers the passing of decades by remixing a vintage reference while also offering a sophisticated consideration of our calendar as represented in the mechanical movement and its clever time-display on the dial.
