He works at Oregon Health and Sciences University in Portland, Oregon. Leonard Merritt manages the train department at Tammies Hobbies in Beaverton, Oregon, and volunteers in Washington County, teaching senior high school students in model design and construction. They are the authors of Arcadia Publishings Images of Rail: Sumpter Valley Railways, and both are members of Sumpter Valley Railroad Restoration, Inc.
