Description: Beautiful set of fourteen (14) 1960-61 drawings by American artist, Stuart Egnal (1940-1966). Some are still in sketch book, and some have been torn out but were part of the suite originally. Oil pastel on paper, each sheet measures 8 3/4 x 11 5/8 inches. Unframed. Unsigned. Most are identified and dated with location as Savoy. Names of subjects include Kim Rose, Beth Rudin, Pat Rubick, As the pastel is oil based, it is stable and fixed reasonably well to the paper with no smudging or loss. These drawing come from an archive containing hundreds of Egnal works on paper as depicted in last photo. Stuart Egnal studied at The Philadelphia College of Art (now known as University of the Arts), abroad at the Academia Di Belli Arti in Florence, Italy, and earned an MFA at the University of Pennsylvania. His works are in the collections of The Philadelphia Print Club, University of Pennsylvania, The Philadelphia Museum of Art, The National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C., The Free Library of Philadelphia, Friends' Central School and private and public collections. His mother notes: “…Stuart was always drawing from the time he was a young boy, but he focused his attention on painting when he was at the Friends’ Central School and continued to grow.” A poem by well-known poet Wendell Berry, a friend of the younger Egnal, written in 1966, referring to time together the poet and artist spent in Florence, Berry wrote “….Fine hours. The sort men dream of having, and of having had. Today, while I slept, I saw it all again, and words for you came to me as though we sat there talking still in the quick of August.” In a life too brief, Mr. Egnal created art passionately and prolifically. A graduate of the Philadelphia College of Art (B.F.A.) and The University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Fine Arts (M.F.A.)His body of work includes Sculpture, Painting, and Prints. His work is in the Collections of The Philadelphia Museum of Art; The National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C; The Free Library of Philadelphia and other public and private collections. A Retrospective Exhibition of his work was held in the Spring of 1967 sponsored by The Faculty of the Department of Fine Arts, Univ. of Penna. In 2006, to commemorate his life and passing 40 years earlier, The University City Arts League exhibited his work.
