Unfaded and without spotting or toning of the medium. Excepting very minor creasing, clean and fresh throughout. Spencer moved to the Hampshire village of Burghclere to work on his paintings. He used the time to explore the village, to paint gardens and cottages as here. In his artistic contemplations he captures the supernatural and its symbolism in the most ordinary of scenes, such as in this picture or his ‘Lilies’. It is this kind of way of seeing through things for which his work gained notoriety.
