It helps with navigation and warns of shallows. It is one of the oldest continuously operating lighthouses on the shores of Lake Peipus.In 1923, the first wooden beacon was built on the shore of Rannapungerja, but a new, reinforced concrete lighthouse was built there in 1934. In 1943, there was a red sector between the white sector lights of the lighthouse, warning of the Sahmen shallow. The lighthouse was reconstructed in 2021, with the addition of outdoor lighting with spotlights. The wood-planked observation platform at the foot of the lighthouse offers a beautiful view of Lake Peipus and the coastal landscape. In addition, the annual Tuletorni Kontsert (Lighthouse Concert) is held near the lighthouse and has become a tradition.
