Tucker "To my mind, the most significant single scholarly contribution made to date, anywhere, to the history of Soviet power."—George F. Kennan FORMAT Paperback LANGUAGE English CONDITION Brand New Publisher Description This book forms the second volume of Tuckers biography of Stalin, the first volume of which was "Stalin as Revolutionary". The author shows that Stalin was a Bolshevik of the radical right whose revolution cast the country deep into its imperial, autocratic past. In 1929 Stalin plunged Soviet Russia into a coercive "revolution from above", a decade-long effort to amass military-industrial power for a new war. He forced 25 million peasant families into state-run collectives and transformed the Communist Party into a servile instrument. In 1939, he concluded the pact with Hitler that enabled him to grasp at Eastern Europe while Hitler made war in the West. Tucker brings a fresh analysis to these events and to the Terror of the 1930s, revealing the motives and methods of what he calls the greatest murder mystery of this century. Author Biography Robert C. Tucker is professor of politics emeritus at Princeton University and past president of the American Association for the Advancement of Slavic Studies. Review "Anyone who does not read Stalin in Power from cover to cover will miss the opportunity of gaining real insight into the forces that shaped the Soviet Union. This is the best book about Stalin that has ever been written and one that is not likely to be superseded in the foreseeable future." -- W. Bruce Lincoln - Chicago Tribune "Tucker writes psychobiography with tact and common sense, never letting Freud get out of hand, while his narrative holds the reader in grim fascination." -- Jane A. Taubman - Los Angeles Times "Mr. Tucker has hunted out the sources, and he has discovered and developed a great deal more than has been generally known... An extremely valuable contribution to our knowledge." -- Robert Conquest - Wall Street Journal Kirkus UK Review Almost as many books may by now have been written about the Russian revolution as the French one, and Stalins Terror is at least as fascinatingly dreadful as Marats and at last, with new documentation available, is becoming even better documented. Professor Tuckers is probably the most detailed book yet available on the subject, revealing Stalins preoccupation with Russias former greatness, and his determination to make her great again - consciously using many of the methods of the Tsars. A gracefully written, admirably constructed account of perhaps the most remarkable 13 years in recent history, as fascinating and accomplished in its general narrative sweep as in its individual portraits and details. (Kirkus UK) Kirkus US Review Here, Tucker (Politics/Princeton; The Marxian Revolutionary Idea, 1969) persuasively depicts Stalin as a traditional Russian despot who, while purporting to lead a revolution, reverted to the authoritarianism of the Tatars and czars. Tucker concentrates on Stalins "second revolution" in domestic policy, beginning in 1928. Like the reforms of Ivan the Terrible and Peter the Great, Tucker argues, Stalins policy constituted a "revolution from above" that sought to transform Russia by force into a militarily powerful and industrially advanced nation. Thus, Stalin paradoxically modernized Russia by reactionary means. Tucker theorizes that, out of a neurotic need to establish himself as a revolutionary hero equivalent to Lenin, and with an acute awareness of Russian tradition (keener than that of the other Bolsheviks, perhaps, because Stalin was not Russian but Georgian), Stalin started a revolution as a radical means of modernizing Russias economy. He fostered a continuing sense of crisis, which was well served by terror - collectivization, the liquidation of the landed peasantry, the purges, and the show trials. While Stalin modernized the Russian economy in many ways, Tucker makes clear that his reign ultimately weakened the country, especially through his foolish rapprochement with Hitler. At books end, the reader is left with the image of Stalin on the day of the German invasion of the Soviet Union, stunned with the realization of his folly. Tucker develops his thesis with erudition and a sure command of the facts, and impressively details the manifold continuities between imperial Russia and the modern Soviet Union.
