Description: In May of 2000, the Carlie Bell collection of surplus space hardware was auctioned off on Merritt Island, Florida. Charlie had worked for NASA, at the Kennedy Space Center (KSC). Mr. Bell amassed an incredible collection of surplus hardware and tooling, from Mercury, Gemini, Apollo and Shuttle. So much so, it took 3 weekends to auction off all he had collected. These Space Shuttle insulation pieces came from that auction.We obtained these from a collector who purchased all of these at the Bell auction, during the first weekend, along with some fit check tiles from Challenger. (See our other listings) They were in a box Marked "OV102 flown insulation" OV-102 being Orbital Vehicle #102, commonly known as "Columbia". From our research, these were used in a variety of locations on the Orbiter, but mainly the cargo bay. The Orbiters were configured specifically for each mission, as a result, many of these custom Beta cloth and Kapton insulations were scrapped after they were no longer needed. While some of the pieces we have look similar, each is unique. Some pieces a spray painted red, this indicating they were to be "scrapped" and not used again. These come displayed on a mahogany base, with a metal plaque denoting their history. Each insulation piece is mounted on a stainless steel wire frame that does not damage the artifact. An Orbital Surplus COA is affixed to the bottom of each piece, listing the NASA part number and the OS serial number. This insulation piece is OS UN. So depending on what empire has collapsed, space freighter has crashed or Transport "got lost", we never know what we will receive next.
