Soviet Tokarev SVT Semi- Automatic and Automatic rifles - Second Edition.

Description: Tokarev's rifles occupy a special place in the history of Soviet arms. The most famous of them, the semi-automatic rifle mod. 1940 (SVT-40), was assigned to fulfill a role unprecedented for its time – to become the world's first system of this class designed to completely replace the army magazine-feed rifle. There is no doubt that for the majority of combat and operational characteristics the SVT-40 rifle was at the level of the best foreign analogs. It played an important role in the difficult conditions of the first year of the Great Patriotic War: until the launch of the production of submachine guns, it was the only mass-produced individual automatic weapon of the Red Army. Despite positive combat characteristics, Tokarev's rifles were not widely accepted by the troops due to a number of shortcomings and were gradually ousted from the service by the other types of weapons. Why did this happen? How did the rifle's combat service evolve? What was its combat effectiveness? Are there objective reasons for a negative assessment of the Tokarev rifle? The answers to these and other questions can be found in R. Chumak's book. * The story of Tokarev's rifle in the book is told by taking into account a complex of technical, economic, and military-political factors that influenced its development, production, and operation. The book consists of an introduction, nine chapters, a conclusion, and nine appendices. The book outlines the results of the trials in the 1920s-1930s on the development of automatic rifles and gives a general chronology of the creation of the military automatic rifle in the USSR. The book contains detailed information on the number of Tokarev rifles produced at all factories over the entire period of their production. These numbers are based strictly on archival material and are published for the first time. Use of Tokarev's rifles in the combat, their main operational shortcomings, and the causes of their occurrence are described in detail. The book presents technical data characterizing the effectiveness of SVT-40 and AVT rifles. The book contains images, description, and meaning of the main types of markings applied to different parts of Tokarev's rifles. Appendices, in addition to various technical materials, contain color images of propaganda posters of the wartime era which depict this rifle, photos of F.V. Tokarev and his artistic portraits, images of art pieces and different devices made personally by Tokarev which constituted an essential part of his hobbies. While working on this book, the author used a unique collection of weapons from the assets of the Military Historical Museum of Artillery, Engineer and Signal Corps (Saint-Petersburg), Tula State Museum of Arms and the Central Museum of the Armed Forces, as well as some other organizations in which practically all samples of Tokarev's serial and trial rifles are present. All of them are shown in the book, and most of these rifles are presented to readers for the first time. In addition, the author widely used the drawings of SVT-38 and SVT-40 rifles, as well as sets of spare parts for them from the Archive of Military Historical Museum of Artillery, Engineer and Signal Corps. The book contains images of previously unpublished Tokarev semi-automatic and full auto rifles, rifles of other designers, and many unique wartime photographs. Because of the depth of coverage of Tokarev's semi-automatic and full auto rifles, this edition has no analogs in Russia or in the world. The second edition of the book differs from the first with deeper coverage of a number of aspects of the history of the creation, production, and operation of Tokarev's rifles of all varieties. These changes were introduced based on the results of the study of newly discovered archival materials from the archives of the Central Archive of Defence Ministry and other agencies. The new edition adds a significant number of photo images and descriptions of previously unpublished prototypes of weapons designed by Tokarev and other arms designers during the described time period. In addition, the attribution of some of Tokarev's rifles published in the first edition and the circumstances of several episodes of his biography are further expanded in the second edition of the book. The number of pictures, on which Tokarev's rifles are shown in battle conditions was updated and significantly expanded – these photos are highlighted in a separate special appendix. All photos and drawings are provided with captions in English, which will make the book more accessible to Western readers interested in the topic of Tokarev's rifles. The book will be published in a full-color format with high-quality printing. We recommend the book to all readers interested in the history of Soviet small arms and the Tokarev rifles in particular.680 pages, Huge! Great reference for all collectors .
