Just like the original, it is made in brass and has a serial number struck on the rim (the location of the number is a unique feature of the Nakhimov Medal). The medallion measures 43.6 mm in height incl. eyelet, 35.6 mm in width – VERY close to original. Overall weight of the medal including suspension is 31.2 g. This replica was made to sell as an original. It is very nicely detailed and has convincing looking wear and patina. Of course, at close examination it is obvious that it is not the real thing. In particular, the font of the serial number is off (and doesn’t quite fit on the rim); the fine details of the artwork are slightly wrong. Interestingly, the faker even added "an extra touch": a phony late-style Leningrad Mint logo on the reverse of the eyelet, something that does not belong on a Nakhimov medal - or any medal of WW2 era for that matter. All these things are noticeable to an experienced collector, but we often see fakes like this one passed as originals to unsuspecting beginners. This medal came from an old collection; as far as we know, it was purchased in Europe back in the 90s.
