Description: DETAILS: Original pinback button issued by the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC). Circa 1960. This was the first pinback button issued by SNCC and was circulated to members engaged in the Greensboro, North Carolina sit-in's in February 1960. Measures 1" inch. Rare.Greensboro Sit-In - The Greensboro sit-in were a series of civil rights protest that started in January 1960, when young African American students staged a sit-in at a segregated Woolworth’s lunch counter in Greensboro, North Carolina, and refused to leave after being denied service. The young activists quickly mobilized and established the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) to organize members in order to expand the sit in's. Within days the sit-in movement spread to college towns throughout the Deep South. Buttons were issued to members so that they could better identify each other and show segregationists that they would not be intimidated. Though many of the protesters were arrested for trespassing, disorderly conduct or disturbing the peace, their actions made an immediate and lasting impact, forcing Woolworth’s and other establishments to change their segregationist policies. SNCC Button History Between 1960 and 1967, SNCC issued three version of their handshake pinback buttons. The first issued in February, 1960 was green in color, had a bi-racial handshake with a world map background. The second issued in the Spring of 1960 was a simple black and white design with human hands. The third, issued in 1967, incorporated a yin yang symbol instead of hands.Of the three designs, the black and white version was by far the most popular. It became an iconic symbol of the positive message of the Civil Rights Movement. It should be noted however, that between 1960-1967, there were numerous variation of this black and white button design. Each change incorporated subtle alterations to the artwork and design layout. The pin in this listing is for the original design which was issued by SNCC in February, 1960 for their Greensboro Sit In protest campaign.
