For reference, 40 paras = 1 kurus. The coin displays 80 in Arabic numerals indicating 2 kurus The coin was struck in Islambol (Istanbul or Constantinople) in 1757 AD or 1171 AH, at the beginning of Mustafa III’s reign. Mustafa III was born to Sultan Ahmed III and his wife Mihrişah Kadın. He was raised in captivity along with his brothers in Topkapi Palace while he awaited his succession to the Ottoman throne. Soon after the disposition of his father by the Janissary rebel Patrona Halil, Mustafa’s cousin, Mahmud I, became sultan. Mustafa became sultan after his cousin Osman III died in 1757. Mustafa’s reign had its strengths as well as its weaknesses. Mustafa especially cared for justice and fairness throughout his empire and ensured that his laws were enforced. He caused a period of exceptional prosperity for Istanbul as well as other parts of the empire. However, Mustafa’s reign had its downfall with the defeat in the Russo-Turkish War of 1768. In 1774, The Ottoman Empire lost Crimea, Romania, and parts of Bulgaria. This disastrous defeat may have caused in his heart attack and death on January 21, 1774. His brother, Abdulhamid I, succeeded him.
