Description: This is a Silicon Graphics (SGI) Octane workstation, built circa 2000 - a specialized type of computer that was chiefly employed in the movie visual effects industry at the time and one of the most powerful desktops available in that year. I have not had a use for it in a long time as it is very slow by today's standards, but I do not want to simply throw it out as I consider these machines an important piece of computer history and thus am offering it to any collector who will take good care of it. It has not been powered on for probably 14 years up until the time of taking these photos, so it should still have a lot of usage left in it. You can see in the photos that it still powers on. It comes with a hard drive loaded with the IRIX operating system, so it should be good to use right out of the box. I am unsure, however, as to which version it has because I lack a monitor that supports the necessary "sync-on-green" signal support to display the video output, but I know it was one of the last versions released, so the 6.5.x series. Likewise, I do not know the exact CPU or RAM but given the model number I suspect it sports at least a MIPS R12000 at 300 MHz, and it may be as fast as 400 MHz. You will have to see, though! It has a little scuffing on the case and the front bezel door is a bit broken at the hinge, requiring an added wire to keep it in place. Want a piece of computing history? Want to make 2000-era visual effects (a la The Matrix), with period equipment? Go and grab this one while it's still hot! NOTE: While I currently live in Minnesota, the machine is with my family in Idaho, and that is where it will ship from.
