Text description beneath the picture (subject to any spelling errors due to the OCR program used) OLD SHAMBLES AND MARKET PLACE, SETTLE. Though small, Settle is an old market-town of the West Riding of Yorkshire. It is on the banks of the Ribble, and is built close up to the cliff of the Castleberg, a hill of limestone which in places seems almost to overhang the houses beneath, and from the top of which there are beautiful and extensive views. The "Shambles" is an old building of uncertain date, still used for slaughtering cattle and as a meat-market; but the basement or cellar is now occupied by workshops, and the upper storey, to which there is access by outer steps and a balcony, is occupied as dwellings. The top of the fountain, erected about 1864, was taken from the old market cross, which was pulled down at the same time.
