Since the return to multinational operations in 2002 and a ten-year break due to war events in the territory of the former SFRY, the Army of Yugoslavia and the Army of Serbia and Montenegro participated in two United Nations missions: UNMISET in East Timor and ONUB in Burundi, engaging officers as military observers . Even such a "spot" engagement of a few officers required the existence of an organizational unit that would coordinate all activities on the selection of quality personnel, their equipping, preparation for performing specific duties outside the borders of our country and resolving their status during this engagement. Since 2002, the field of multinational operations has been handled by the Department for International Integration and Peace Operations at the Operational Directorate of the General Staff of the Army of Serbia and Montenegro. On October 14, 2003, the department grew into the National Center for Peacekeeping Missions, which was subordinated to the Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the Army of Serbia and Montenegro. The Center for Peacekeeping Operations, as the legal successor of the National Center for Peacekeeping Missions, was established on January 1, 2005, and until May 17, 2020, was directly subordinated to the Joint Operational Command of the General Staff of the Serbian Armed Forces, after which the Center for Peacekeeping Operations was a unit directly subordinated unit of the Operational Directorate (J-3) of the General Staff of the Serbian Armed Forces. The Day of the Center for Peace Operations is celebrated on November 17, in commemoration of the day when, in 1956, the predecessor of the Yugoslav People's Army Detachment was sent to the UN Emergency Response Force in Sinai.
