Description: This is a nifty cover(w/ some minor stains on either side, and a back flap that is about 95% intact, but has some creases) sent from Santa Fe(a pretty great strike of the CDS!), New Mexico Territory, to New York City, New York, on January 9, 1883! The addressee, a Mrs. J. E. Leaycroft, was a sister of Hanford Crawford, a New Yorker who would make a fortune in the St. Louis area in the early 1900s! Mrs. Leaycroft's nickname was, "Carrie(written to the left of the address)!" J. Edgar Leycroft, himself, was a wealthy real estate developer, and later, New York State Tax Commissioner! Despite lengthy research, it's impossible to say who sent this mail to Mrs. Leaycroft. But, considering that her nickname was used, I would say that it was one of her numerous siblings, with Hanford being a good possibility, considering his penchant for traveling, and eventual settling out west in Missouri. As for the green, 3-Cent, "Washington," it's in fine condition! The mail arrived in NYC on 1/14/83, and was delivered to, "Carrie," the next day. Noted imperfections aside, this remains a neat piece of New Mexico Territory postal history, with a connection to a number of well-known individuals of the late 1800s/early 1900s!
