Description: VINTAGE SAMI ZILKA (ZILKHA) ISRAEL STERLING SILVER ROMAN GLASS BROOCH PENDANT on 925 NECK COLLAR 1970’s OOAK This stunning piece is both a brooch and pendant. When worn as a pendant it hangs vertically but as a brooch it is multi-directional, see the various images. The brooch/pendant is OOAK and was hand made by Israeli artisan and jeweler Sami Zilka (Zilkha) in the 1970’s. It epitomizes his style during that period: a delicious mix of Modernist sensibility with a soft Brutalist edge. A magnificent shard of ancient Roman glass is enclosed in the uniquely shaped focal piece. The colors in the glass are extraordinarily luminous and to my eye they have the appearance of a glorious opal. The piece is further accented by 4 Akoya pearls. The sterling neck collar is hand made but I can find no markings. Tests as 925. Quite the statement piece. You will garner many compliments when you wear it. Stamped S. ZILKA HANDMADE ABOUT THE ARTIST: Sami Zilkha was born in 1936 in Baghdad, Iraq, and immigrated to Israel in 1951. He graduated from the Tel Aviv College for Art Teachers in 1970. Zilkha became deeply immersed in the craft of goldsmithing and within just a few years he had developed such expertise that he became the principal goldsmith at the workshop of the late Eli Gera, during which time Sami became acquainted with Rachel Gera, who influenced him greatly. Sami created jewelry for celebrities such as actresses Elizabeth Taylor, Maria Schell, Anna Magnani, as well as the actors Peter Ustinov and Jean Mare and the singer Adamo.
