This framed watercolor lithograph by artist Rudolf Freund was a product of the Turner MFG. Co., Chicago Ill. from the 1940’s. The frame is well built, heavy and in good condition. It is marked on the back of the frame: “CARDINAL ON MOCKORANGE BY RUDOLPH FREUND, A PRODUCT OD THE TURNER MFG. CO., CHICAGO ILL., PATENT PENDING” Measurements Height 11.0” X Width 9.0” x Depth 2.0” (Print 5” x 4.5”) Condition Exceptionally good, print in excellent condition, the paper cover on the back of the frame needs new cover if so desired by the purchaser. Rudolf Christian Freund (1915 – 1969) was a renowned, hard-driven American scientific illustrator and naturalist with an aptitude for relentless and detailed observation, and a passion for exactitude.[1] His quest for perfection led him to travel to the often-unexplored habitats of the creatures and botanical species he drew. Freund’s art appeared in magazines, nature books and guides, as well children’s books. During his career, Freund worked as a preparator for the American Museum of Natural History in New York City. He also trained many young artists for a career in the field of scientific illustration. Turner Manufacturing Co.: This agricultural equipment maker originally operated under the name C. H. Turner, going back to 1916, if not earlier. In 1926 C. H. Turner Manufacturing Co. was created by the consolidation of the C. H. Turner machinery operations with C. H. Turner Foundry Co. By the 1930s, the initials had been dropped and the company went by Turner Manufacturing Co. In 1960 they were no longer manufacturing woodworking machinery. That year, the business was acquired by Fletcher Works of Philadelphia and became the Turner Division of Fletcher Industries, Inc.
