Description: The Mini K87 is a high-resolution condenser microphone with a neutral voicing. It aspires to transparency rather than color. Yet it retains enough character to capture and communicate the emotion of the source. The mic's sound comes from a combination of a specially tuned K67/K87-style capsule and a circuit that we've designed to enhance and complement it. The final voicing of the microphone is a manual process that enables us to create a very consistent sound. The Mini K87 excels on vocals (sung and spoken, including voiceover and podcasting), guitars, acoustic strings, and drum overheads. We find that neutral microphones tend to be compatible with a wide range of sources, both instruments and vocals. Because the microphone is not trying to impose too much of its own sound on the source, the Mini K87 sounds good on many of them. The Mini K87 goes through an extensive burn-in, QC, and audio testing process prior to shipping. This ensures that every microphone delivers superior performance out of the box.The Mini K87 ships with our exclusive low-resonance, non-elastic Cutaway shockmount, Roswell branded microfleece mic sock, and an aluminum flight case.Like its more "colored" (that's a reference to its sound) sibling, the Mini K47, the Mini K87 was designed to be small, easy to use, and to sound like it cost three times as much. The Mini K87 and Mini K47 do not sound the same, intentionally; the K47 is "mid forward," or for those familiar with frequency response data, the K47 has a presence bump in the 4k-6kHz range. The K87 is essentially flat in response from 1kHz - 10kHz, rather like the U87, although the Mini K87 has a more gentle roll-off above 12kHz than the U87 does, which gives the Mini K87 more "air" in that top octave. (The Mini K87 also has fuller bass response than the U87.) The Mini K87 circuit is transformerless. It has high sensitivity and low distortion. Like all Roswell mic circuits, it is built and tuned in California using fantastic parts, all of which were selected with the specific purpose of creating the "voice" of this mic. After assembly, each Mini K87 is individually tuned so that its frequency response matches our "Gold Master", within 0.5dB. The sensitivity is also dialed in to within 0.5dB (measured at 1kHz). If you're having trouble deciding which Mini K model to purchase, see the first three episodes of our "Virtual Showroom" video series on Youtube. We filmed and broadcast a recording session, using these two mics on acoustic guitar, vocals, electric guitars, bass, and drums (overheads). We auditioned most sources through both models, so that you can compare. Some people prefer the Mini K47. Some people prefer the Mini K87. Having both covers a LOT of sonic territory. ;-)
