The Rietveld Originals collection includes all of Gerrit Rietveld's furniture designs that are currently in production. The collection consists of furniture that is produced by us as the official licensee of the Stichting ouders dr. G. Th. Rietveld and the designs that are published by Cassina, Gispen and Tecta. With this design he once again proved his status as a groundbreaking designer. The chair owes its name to the Hague jeweler and court supplier Steltman who commissioned Rietveld in 1963 to renovate and furnish his shop on the Noordeinde in The Hague.The two mirrored chairs, placed in front of a display case with jewellery, immediately appealed to the imagination. From these chairs, customers could select their jewellery and wedding rings. In this context, the chairs also acquired a symbolic meaning: two separate, opposing shapes that together form a unity. The asymmetrical chair, which provides a surprising image from every angle, is entirely constructed from lines and planes. The Steltman is typical of Rietveld's design ideas and has become a true design classic!The original Steltman chairs were upholstered in white imitation leather. The wooden version, which was only built after Rietveld's death in 1964, is now better known than the original with the imitation leather upholstery.The Steltman chair is built based on the original drawing by Rietveld from 1963. The design is available in a solid oak version and an upholstered version in felt or leather. The wooden version is made of solid quarter-sawn oak, matt lacquered or stained in whitewash or black. The felt or leather version can be chosen from various colours.
