Signatures in pencil on backing sheet are by another hand. Thread margins around plate. Georg Friedrich Schmidt was one of the leading engravers of the 18th century. He trained in Paris in 1736-46, then returned to Berlin as principal engraver to King of Prussia. Between 1757-62 he was based in St Petersburg, to engrave a portrait of Empress Catherine and to set up an engraving school. Schmidt’s etchings after Rembrandt, produced about a century after the originals by the Dutch artist, are highly regarded. His etchings are held in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum, the Hermitage, the National Gallery, the British Museum and other major museums around the world. Plate: 4 x 5 inches
