(previously the Atelier voor Kerkelijke Vestkunst AW Stadelmaier and from 1977 to 2004 Stadelmaier Nijmegen BV) was a Dutch family business specialized in the manufacture of liturgical vestments and other paraments, operating from 1930 to 2010. In its 80 years of existence, the company went to the Top of the parameter makers in the world are with dealers in Italy, Austria, Germany, England, the United States and Canada. The couple Arthur Willi Stadelmaier (Pforzheim, November 4, 1901 - Nijmegen, May 17, 1981) and Magdalena Stadelmaier-Glässner (Groß Wartenberg (today's Syców), September 27, 1906 - Nijmegen, September 20, 1989) settled in the late twenties of the twentieth century in Nijmegen. The couple were naturalized in 1939. They started as Dutch representatives of Emil Metzner from Neustadt (Upper Silesia) (today's Prudnik), a company that supplied religious textiles. In October 1930, A.W. Stadelmaier joined the Nijmegen Chamber of Commerce as a studio and sales office for paraments and handicraft materials. In addition to the sale of parament fabrics and parts of the Metzner company (until 1934), the company made robes to its own design. Magdalena Glässner, who had been trained as an embroiderer by the Ursulines in Ober-Weistritz (Bystrzyca Górna), was in charge of the embroidery workshop.Magdalena Stadelmaier b. Glässner at work in the studio on the Oranjesingel (photo Jan van Teeffelen, c. 1970). Tapestry of the firm Stadelmaier presented on behalf of the city of Nijmegen to Pope Pius XII in 1955The paraments were given a clearly recognizable style of the artist and designer Wim van Woerkom (1905-1998), who was hired on a freelance basis in 1936. Magdalena Glässner remained responsible for the conversion of Van Woerkom's designs to embroidery. She determined the applied embroidery techniques, colors and materials, and with that to a large extent the quality and appearance of the robes. Characteristic of the work of the studio until the early 1960s are figures formed by expressive embroidery stitches over applications. The figures are angular, with emphatic facial features and black contour lines. The color palette contributed to the contemporary look. After the Second World War, the company focused exclusively on making paraments, wall hangings and banners for ecclesiastical use. A.W. Stadelmaier had a distinct corporate vision: the liturgical vestments made in the studio had to be of a traditional but also artistic quality. From the outset, the company profiled itself in the market with broadly deployed advertising campaigns around important assignments in which this vision was displayed. High-profile projects from the early period were the robes for the chapels on board the large passenger ships of the Holland-America Line, the Nieuw-Amsterdam (1946) and the Statendam (1957), and the tapestry depicting St. Stephen, the emperor Trajan and Charlemagne, after a design by Van Woerkom. This was presented to Pope Pius XII on behalf of the Catholic Nijmegen on the occasion of the 1850th city jubilee. On the occasion of the 1850th anniversary of the city of Nijmegen, a tapestry made by the firm Stadelmaier was presented to Pope Pius XII. The picture shows the mayor of Nijmegen, C.M.J.H. Hustinx, and on the right A.W. Stadelmaier and Wim van Woerkom, the designer. Thanks to its distinct style, which was considered innovative yet 'pious', important commissions and regular interest in the press, the company gained great reputation in the 1950s. Bernard Konrad Paul Stadelmaier (Nijmegen, 4/8/1934) joined the company in 1954 as a representative. In 1957 he managed to persuade Monsignor Bekkers to wear the Stadelmaier parameters, which are known as modern day, during his initiation as bishop of Den Bosch. In addition, Ben Stadelmaier was actively involved in the development of vestments appropriate to the new liturgy, including a vestment for the concelebration. The so-called Nijmegen model has a raised collar and is worn with a stole over the robe. Since its introduction in the 1970s, this type of robe with a so-called 'outer stole' is still in use worldwide. This deviant robe was papal nil obstat (no objection) when Pope John Paul II wore it on his visit to the Netherlands in 1985. The outer stole was specially designed for him with an image of St. Willibrord, after a design by W. Persey (see the image of Pope John Paul II in the Jaarbeurshal in Utrecht).Pope JP II wears the Stadelmaier model chasuble with outer stole and a low miter. A momentum in the costume history of the chasuble (the Utrechtse Jaarbeurs, 12 May 1985).For various reasons, the profession of parament maker got into trouble in the sixties and the number of workshops declined rapidly. An important cause was the renewal of the liturgy on the occasion of the Second Vatican Council. Ben Stadelmaier took over the company from his father in 1977 together with his wife Marianne Stadelmaier-van Baal (1938-2016). He introduced innovations, such as the use of unpatterned lightweight fabrics and promoted the Nijmegen model at an international level. Thanks to the expansion of the American market and the success of the new dress shape and variations on it, the company experienced a second flowering period. From the 1980s onwards, the Stadelmaier firm was known for the quality of its robes that emphasized the beauty of the Eucharist and the sober but exclusive robes were called haute couture for the clergy. Under the leadership of Aart Stadelmaier (1965), who succeeded his father in 1997, the company specialized in modern, sober robes for large ceremonies, especially for the American market. For example, 1,500 robes were supplied in 1999 for Pope John Paul II's visit to Saint Louis, Missouri, and 800 at the opening of the Los Angeles Cathedral in September 2002. Since 1994, specialist embroidery has been carried out by a manufacturing company in Romania. In 2004 the studio went bankrupt due to a declining market and poor operating resultsThe humeral veil is one of the liturgical vestments of the Roman Rite, also used in some Anglican and Lutheran churches. It consists of a piece of cloth about 2.75 metres (108 in) long and 90 centimetres (35 in) wide draped over the shoulders and down the front, normally of silk or cloth of gold. At the ends there are sometimes pockets in the back for hands to go into so that the wearer can hold items without touching them with the hands. There is no clarity on when the humeral veil first appeared, though it was certainly in use in the continental Tridentine Rite and in other pre-Reformation usages including the Sarum Rite. The humeral veil is of the liturgical colour of the day on which it is used, or else is white or cloth of gold. The humeral veil is most often seen during the liturgy of Exposition and Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament. When priests or deacons bless the people with the monstrance, they cover their hands with the ends of the veil so that their hands do not touch the monstrance as a mark of respect for the sacred vessel and as an indication that it is Jesus present in the Eucharistic species who blesses the people and not the minister.
