He was 53 years old and had lived and worked for many years in the loft rstudio building at 797 Green liwich Street. Mr. Weber was born of Swiss parents in Basel and began sistudying painting with Ernst Suter while attending the Uni versity of Basel. In 1939 he studied in Paris with Marcel Gimond and came to know Aristide Maillol and Alberto Giacometti, with both of whom he worked later after service in the Swiss army from 1939 to 1942. Constantin Brancusi was another influence in the mid 1940's. In 1946 Mr. Weber was in vited to join the Institute of Design in Chicago by Laszlo Moholy‐Nagy shortly before his death. Mr. Weber soon became teacher of the foundation, or first‐year, course. Works Widely Shown Mr. Weber's paintings were widely exhibited, especially at the Chicago Art Institute, where he is represented in the perma nent collection. A showing of his abstract paintings at the Betty Parsons Gallery here in 1954 was praised by a Times critic for “vitality and an incessant search for fresh pictorial ideas.” His work was described as “an art of pure self‐expression,” re flecting nothing in terms of subject matter, which “would guarantee nothing were it not that he is a virtuoso with the brush and that his color sense is delicately exuberant.” Mr. Weber lived in Paris from 1955 to 1960, then came to New York and became established in the loft building with other art ists. A Times reporter who visited his studio in 1963 described him as “a lean, bearded artist” whose “large abstract paintings dominate the walls of his studio. A double bed, a hot plate and a refrigerator are his only concessions to the tern poral.” Although working mainly in painting, Mr. Weber had also done sculpture, including a bronze portrait of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, the architect. He had also made two films, Vision in Flux (1951) and “Process Documentation by the Painter” (1954). The latter showed him in the act of paint ing in an effort, he explained, to show its developmental aspect and the spontaneity of the artist's continuous search for symbolic meaning. Mr. Weber is survived by a son, Lukas, of New York; a step‐daughter, Marion Cajori, and his mother, Mrs. Emma Huber‐Klein of Basel.
